Arizona set to test Romney’s appeal to Hispanics

PHOENIX — With this weekend’s endorsement by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, Mitt Romney has amassed the backing of what could be considered the trifecta of hard-liners on illegal immigration — and he will put that to the test with Hispanic voters Tuesday in Arizona’s GOP primary.

Mr. Romney also has the support of former California Gov. Pete Wilson and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who together with Ms. Brewer have led state immigration crackdown efforts during the past two decades. Their backing solidifies the former Massachusetts governor’s credentials as the toughest candidate on the issue.

Democrats said the endorsements will damage Mr. Romney among Hispanics in Arizona this week — and across the country in November — should he go on to win the GOP’s presidential nomination.

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus has announced the next phase of the RNC’s national Latino engagement effort:

“The expanded multifaceted approach to connect with the Hispanic community will include both digital outreach, traditional voter identification, and get out the vote efforts,” said RNC Chairman Priebus. “Aimed at connecting with the fastest growing demographic, the RNC will place staff on the ground across the country to coordinate the GOP’s Hispanic effort as part of a program to make sure Barack Obama is a one-term president. Latinos play an integral role in our communities and the Republican Party believes it is essential to involve Latinos at every level of our Party’s efforts in 2012.”

To organize the national effort and oversee state-level staff working with local Latino communities, the RNC has named Bettina Inclán as the Director of Hispanic Outreach. Bettina is the former Executive Director of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly and has served on numerous campaigns at the national, state and local level. Most recently, Bettina worked on statewide campaigns in both California and Florida. She was part of the team that elected Rick Scott Governor of Florida, who secured over 50 percent of the Hispanic vote in his successful run in 2010.

To kick-off the effort, the RNC has launched a Twitter account @RNCLatinos and a Tumblr blog at RNCLatinos.tumblr.com. The social media sites will include the latest bilingual content, research and videos from the RNC and provide an opportunity for the community to share their thoughts. The Twitter account and Tumblr blog will join the existing bilingual website for Latinos.

“With the unemployment rate for the Latino community at eleven percent, over two points higher than the national average, Latinos across the country are frustrated with Obama’s failed economic policies. Their dissatisfaction with the president creates an opening for the Republican Party’s message of economic security and conservative values to resonate with Latinos,” said

A mobile text campaign has also been launched asking Latino voters to text “ÚNETE” (Unite) to 91919 (Data & Msg rates may apply) and join the RNC’s mobile army.

To sway the outcome of the Republican primary in Florida and beyond, pastors at hundreds of churches affiliated with the National Latino Evangelical Coalition are exhorting their congregations in key battleground states "to vote, to get engaged, to get others engaged, and to go to the voting booths," the group's president, Gabriel Salguero, told the Huffington Post.

Historically, that would be good news for the Republicans. United with them on socially conservative family values, as Ronald Reagan first noted, evangelicals are the group of Latino voters that has shown some of the strongest support for the GOP.

The Hispanic Leadership Network — “a sustained effort to engage the Hispanic Community on center-right issues,” co-chaired by former Gov. Jeb Bush and launched in 2010 — works to address the economy, education, health care and immigration.

Hispanic GOP Group to Ron Paul: Apology Not Enough, Paul Should Quit Race

Marshall, MN – Friday, Ron Paul finally apologized for racist newsletters and fund raising letters sent out in his name, but there remain questions to be answered, and answers to be questioned.

We still do not know who wrote the racist material. Though he denied it, Lew Rockwell has been reported as Ron Paul’s principal ghostwriter, raising another important issue. Lew Rockwell was also Ron Paul’s congressional chief of staff. What sort of individuals does Ron Paul surround himself with? What sort of leaders would Ron Paul surround himself with as president?

Also unknown are the ghost writers for Ron Paul’s recent books. Do the books represent Ron Paul’s views, or, as with the newsletters, did Ron Paul hire ghost writers and not even bother to read the material before publication?

We believe Ron Paul when he says he did not write or review the racist material before publication, but there is still an extremely important issue at stake here. Ron Paul asks us to trust his leadership ability as president of the United States, when he has already demonstrated he cannot even manage a newsletter staff of just a few!

During the last election, there was also a scandal about Ron Paul accepting contributions through Stormfront, a thoroughly racist web site. Ron Paul refused to return a contribution from Don Black, owner of Stormfront, or to block incoming fund raising links from Stormfront. Ron Paul remains as popular as ever at Stormfront, and dozens of Stormfront supporters are helping Ron Paul’s campaign this election too. What candidate for public office in their right mind accepts money and support from white supremacists? The highly respected David Horowitz claims Ron Paul is a “vicious anti-semite” and his positions about the Middle East emphasize disturbing questions about Paul and Stormfront.

We don’t believe Ron Paul is presidential material. Not only has he demonstrated a lack of leadership with his newsletters, support from racists, and a notable lack of substantive accomplishments as a Congressman, but he is dangerously naïve about foreign policy, particularly the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. Long gone are the days when America could be isolationist, hiding behind ‘fortress America.’ We learned that on 9/11, which notably Ron Paul has blamed on America. Iran calls Israel “little Satan” and America “big Satan” and talks about wiping Israel off the map. If Iran, directly or through its terrorist proxies, is willing to use nuclear weapons on “little Satan” then shouldn’t we realize Iran would use nuclear weapons on us too?

We also don’t believe Ron Paul can beat Barrack Obama in the general election, especially with the weight of these racist newsletters, and open support from white supremacists hanging like an albatross around his neck. The GOP will need to attract many more minority voters in the general election to defeat Obama. Obama stands ready to rip apart any GOP nominee with even a hint of a racist past. Ron Paul cannot defeat Obama, and we call on Ron Paul to quit the race.

“Don’t know her, but on paper I think she looks very impressive,” veteran GOP strategist Mike Murphy, a one-time aide to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, told The Daily Caller.

A conservative former prosecutor, Martinez is the most popular of the new Republican governors elected last fall, with an approval rating at or above 50 percent in a traditionally liberal state.

“What makes Martinez’s numbers so noteworthy is that she’s doing it as a Republican in a state that voted for Barack Obama by 15 points in 2008 and appears ready to do so again next year,” wrote Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning firm, on Wednesday. “In addition to universal support from Republicans, an unusually high 32 percent of Democrats give her good marks and independents approve of her by a 48/38 margin as well.”

Sanchez bows out of Texas Senate race

With his announcement that he's bowing out of the Texas Senate race, the candidacy of retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez has come full circle.

Eight months ago, the Democrats included the state on its list of six seats the party would aggressively contest for pick-ups.

But after his lackluster launch in August, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee stopped mentioning the state or their recruit.

That lead to Sanchez's email to supporters Friday, in which he essentially acknowledged the hill was to steep to climb.

Today on the Brian Lehrer Show, Matt Barreto, advisor to impreMedia/Latino Decisions polling and a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, discussed the findings of a new poll, which suggests that Latino voters do not care as much about religion or social issues as previously thought.

It's the economy, stupid

Republicans running for president have long had difficulty attracting Latino voters. By one measure, that's surprising: Latinos are more likely to identify as religious and as socially conservative, hewing closer to Republican voters than to Democratic ones.

However, a new impreMedia/Latino Decisions poll shows that Latino voters tend to make political decisions based on economic issues and "role of government" issues than they do on moral issues—just as in the general electorate, jobs and the economy are paramount. Matt Barreto said that Republicans playing up their social conservative credentials, like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, may want to re-think their strategy.

While Latinos may be conservative on some of these issues, same-sex marriage, abortion, that's not what is pushing them to the polls, or what's on the front of their minds when it comes to selecting candidates. Candidates, especially Republican candidates, need to be looking at this and saying, that's not our route to the Latino vote.

A path forward?

One of the surprises of the Republican primary race has been the relatively moderate rhetoric about illegal immigration. Rick Perry's "You don't have a heart" comment, and multiple candidates supporting DREAM Act style amnesty processes has softened one of the GOP's historically hard lines. Barreto said this was a good way to try and bring Latinos into the Republican fold.

When Republicans use negative language to describe undocumented immigrants or the burden they believe undocumented immigrants place on the country, that really drives Latino voters away. Even those in second and third generations are saying, hey, that's not a very nice way to talk about immigrants.

Already Newt Gingrich, who may not have changed his policies, is starting at least to change the way he talks about immigration. He used that phrase, "Let's be humane."

Ross Gregory Douthat a conservative American author, blogger and New York Times columnist argues Why Latinos aren't likely to put Newt Gingrich in the White House.

In reality, Hispanics are a relatively normal swing constituency: They tilt Democratic overall and then tend to move toward one party or the other in much the same way that the country as a whole does, rather than swinging wildly left or right depending on whether the Republican candidate is willing to whisper the words “comprehensive immigration reform” at the correct frequency.

For Hispanics as for most voters, pocketbook issues matter more than identity politics, and a candidate’s overall ideological profile matters more than his positioning on a single issue.

(Yes, a Republican who runs a nakedly xenophobic campaign is likely to have a particular problem with Latinos — but then again a nakedly xenophobic campaign is likely to turn off non-Hispanic swing voters as well.) George W. Bush won a larger-than-average share of the Hispanic vote because he campaigned as a center-right figure in general, not because of his particular focus on amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Mitt Romney and Hispanics: His 2012 outreach strategy

In 2008 the Romney campaign had a strong Hispanic outreach strategy. His son Craig, who has lived in Chile and is fluent in Spanish, regularly spoke on his father’s behalf in Spanish to Hispanic media and audiences.

The 2008 campaign included a Spanish-language communications team, a large team of bilingual surrogates and paid Spanish-language media.

As the Florida GOP’s January 31st primary quickly approaches, be sure to expect a stronger Romney presence in Florida, in English and Spanish. Florida is a pivotal state in the race to secure the GOP nomination, but its even more important in Romney’s calculations. Today’s events are a clear indicator that Romney is playing to win Florida and to secure the crucial Latino Republican vote.

Newt Gingrich hires former Rubio campaign chief Jose Mallea

Via The Buzz: Newt Gingrich is hiring as his Florida director Jose Mallea, who helped steer Marco Rubio’s come-from-behind victory in the 2010 Senate race, reports Beth Reinhard of the National Journal.

Mallea’s move is likely to fuel speculation that Rubio will endorse Gingrich, though the freshman senator has said he would stay neutral in the primary. Gingrich and other candidates have dropped his name as a likely running mate.

Rubio had an autographed picture of Gingrich on his desk when he served in the Florida Legislature and brought it with him to Washington, Mallea said.

“For those of us who came up in politics in the mid 1990s, he’s someone we admired,” Mallea said. “He’s so intelligent on the issues and understands where we need to go as a country.’”

This is quite literally one of the greatest speeches I have ever heard touching on the matter of Hispanics within the Republicans Party. The Democratic Party have long viewed the Hispanic Community as a guaranteed voter block, and fortunately people like Comedian Paul Rodriguez are slowly starting to wake up and smell the hypocrisy.

In 2009, Rodriguez appeared at the Annual California Republican Assembly Convention in Bakersfield CA. At the time Rodriguez addressed the current issue of water being denied to Central Californian farmers, under the Endangered Species Act to protect the Delta Smelt. During his address, Rodriguez also questions his own philosophies, political beliefs, double standards, and stereotypes.

Overall, it truly is Rodriguez's finest half hour.

As more Latinos seek public office running as Republicans, their family backgrounds, particularly having to do with immigration, have come under increasing scrutiny by liberal Latino activists -- a scrutiny that Latino Democrats have not previously faced.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, a Republican and the nation's only Latina governor, recently found documents that suggested that her grandfather legally entered the country. Previous reports said her grandfather was an undocumented immigrant.

The Rise of the Latino Conservative

The Nevada Latinos for Prosperity is obviously doing something right. At a recent town hall meeting headlined by congressional candidate Mark Amodei, I sat cramped in the corner of the tiny El Salvadorian restaurant Asi Es Mi Tierra on Wells Avenue and quietly observed the crowd. What I saw was interesting. Not only was the restaurant packed to the rafters, but the atmosphere was electric. Attendees of all ages passed around pamphlets, chatted enthusiastically, and several new attendees eagerly filled out voter registration forms.

“In Southern Nevada, the Latino community’s buying power is $12 billion a year,” says Elyse Monroy, 24, president of Nevada Latinos for Prosperity. “This is not a number to be taken lightly. Fifty-six percent of the Latino community are homeowners, and the third generation is native born. Our government is getting it wrong, but as our influence increases, they will have to stand up and take notice. Currently the government is burdened, our economy is troubled, and many people tend to look for a scapegoat. It’s really easy to blame someone who is here illegally but remember that not everyone who is a Latino or who is a Mexican is here illegally.”

Carlos Cardoso, an environmental health and safety manager and Cuban immigrant, recently joined Nevada Latinos for Prosperity to offer his talents as a bilingual American. “The Hispanic community—which is a misnomer because it’s a bunch of different countries and cultures being clumped together—are conservative by nature. Our values are more in line with those of the Republican Party, and we are trying to spread the word that this is the political party for us.”

Is the Dream Act Fiscally Responsible?

Recently, I participated in an email discussion with several conservatives about the merits of the Dream Act.

The conversation had a narrow focus involving the fiscal ramifications of passing the bill. When the discussion ended, I was left with the impression that the argument - based on fiscal responsibility - was more of a protective mechanism than a concern about our country's fiscal imbalance.

Fiscal Responsibility and the Economics of the Dream Act

A report by the Center of Immigration Studies stated that the Dream Act will cost taxpayers an estimated $6.1 billion per year in tuition subsidies. That's rather costly. Yet I also noticed a report from the Tax Foundation estimating that the Bush tax cuts would stop $2.1 trillion from going into the federal tax coffers over a ten year period. The cost, according to static scoring models, is approximately thirty-three times the size of the Dream Act.

Imagine que usted es un médico y que tiene como paciente a alguien que tiene un cáncer que lo está matando en un lugar que le causa serios sangramientos, tan serios que también lo pueden matar. La única manera en la que puede removerse la amenaza de largo plazo, el cáncer, es por supuesto operándolo, lo cual a su vez podría causar una hemorragia que podría matar al paciente. Esto es más o menos un símil de lo que está pasando a los europeos y, en realidad a todos nosotros, porque si Europa tiene un colapso, su caída nos llevaría a todos de encuentro.

The 1992 presidential campaign boiled down to this memorable slogan from Bill Clinton's camp: “It’s the economy, stupid!” The 2012 contest for the GOP presidential nomination is now being reduced to an intriguing variation: “It’s all about immigration, stupid!”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry touched the immigration hot button and lost support from Tea Party voters after saying conservatives opposed to in-state university tuition for illegal immigrants revealed a lack of compassion or “heart.”
